Alicia Markova in La Chatte, c1927
The role was originally supposed to be played by Olga Spessivtseva, but Markova had to step in last minute due to injury, and subsequently the two alternated playing the role. The male lead was played by Serge Lifar, and La Chatte was choreographed by George Balanchine. Incredibly, the sculptors, brothers Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner designed the set and the costumes.
Radiant (abstract project about the museum of islamic art)
In 2005, the renowned architect, I.M. Pei, came out of retirement at the age of 88 to design his last major cultural building – The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, Qatar. The images featured in Radiant are an insightful meditation on the physical spaces of MIA. Using an old photo engraving method called photogravure, German photographer, Antje Hanebeck interprets various facets of I.M. Pei’s design through a nostalgic visual experience of atmosphere, light and shadow. The choice of images and presentation reflects MIA’s blend of modern architecture and ancient treasures, shedding light on the many links between the past and the present.
