Paul Eluard and Gala in fancy dress in the sanatorium at Clevadel 1912-13.
Musee d’art et d’histoire, Saint-Denis.
From an early age recurrent tuberculosis forced Paul Eluard (1895-1952) to make frequent stays at sanatoriums. It was at Clevadel in Switzerland that, in 1912, he met Helena Dimitrovnie Diakonova (1894-1982), who had come from Russia on a cure: he was seventeen and she was eighteen. Eluard soon nicknamed her Gala. They were married in Paris in February 1917, and their daughter Cecile was born in May 1918.

* Gala and Dali met in Spain in the summer of 1929, and became lifelong partners. She was still with Eluard at the time, however, they had been having a rough patch in their relationship, and had been having affairs over the past few years.
